Bill Teel Memorial Scholarship winners announced

August 10, 2009

MCT Federal Credit Union recently awarded four student members of MCT with $1,500 scholarships for college through the credit union’s annual Bill Teel Memorial Scholarship program.

Over 70 MCT members applied for the Bill Teel Memorial Scholarship and were judged on extracurricular activities, community involvement, and two essays. One essay described their academic ambitions and post-graduate plans and the other explained how the applicants’ MCT account helped them learn the importance of saving and keeping track of their spending.

The following four MCT members were awarded with Bill Teel Memorial Scholarships:

Althea DaCosta, Clarksburg, Md. (Montgomery College): DaCosta hopes to one day become a pediatrician and specialize in autism. She is currently working towards her undergraduate degree in child biology/psychology and realized that she wanted to study the disorder after spending time with autistic children and learning the difficulties their families go through. Says DaCosta, “In my home country of India, autism isn’t well-accepted because not much is known about the disorder. One day, I hope to shed more light on autism through research and by treating autistic patients.”

Kelly Anne Hauprich, Burtonsville, Md. (McDaniel College): Hauprich has wanted to go into deaf education since the age of five. She is thankful for the Bill Teel Memorial Scholarship, since deaf education is offered at a limited amount of colleges and universities, which causes her to depend on scholarship funds. Says Hauprich, “My lifelong dream is to become a teacher for the deaf and to teach to the best of my ability. I hope to spend a year teaching abroad at a school for the deaf, because I feel that other parts of the world could offer knowledge about deaf education that I may not find here in the U.S.”

Marieanne Paz, Rockville, Md. (St. John’s University): Marieanne hopes to serve as the first Latina U.S. Senator after attending graduate school this fall. After graduation, she hopes to go into community organizing. Says Paz, “My choice in pursuing a career in politics began when I realized the lack of Latino representation in the government. As a senator, I plan to propose several legislations that can bring about change to the current immigration system in place.”

Khendi White, Silver Spring, Md. (Howard University College of Medicine): As a first-year medical student, White has already been published in the Journal of American Medical Association. She hopes to specialize in cardiology, which she decided to go into after shadowing a cardiologist. “I saw a woman come into the hospital with a major heart attack, which gave me a rush and helped me realize the importance of this field. As a doctor, I hope to be a patient advocate, since I feel that this is the key to successful outcomes with today’s rapidly changing healthcare system.”

The Bill Teel Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of a former MCT employee who was employed between the 1970s and 1980s and helped bring innovative technology to the organization. He is remembered as a model employee with a strong work ethic who always went above and beyond his duties to help the organization, and this scholarship is given to a student who holds similar qualities.

Applications for the 2009-2010 Bill Teel Memorial Scholarship will be added to MCT’s website in November 2009.
