MCT awards $1,000 in scholarships to Academy of Finance students
June 5, 2009
MCT Federal Credit Union awarded two $500 scholarships at the Academy of Finance (AOF) graduation at Northwest High School in Germantown, Md. on May 19, 2007. One scholarship is known as the “David Cruces Memorial Award,” named after an AOF student who worked at MCT after graduation and was tragically killed in a car accident. The other scholarship is known as the “MCT Academy of Finance Award.”
This year, Alex Curro of Einstein High School received the David Cruces Memorial Award. This award is traditionally given to an Einstein High School AOF student, since Cruces graduated from Einstein High School. Curro currently holds a 4.57 weighted GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and received an “honorable mention” status in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program. Says Curro of his AOF experience, “Overall, the academy has provided me with an abundance of positive experiences that have helped me develop as an individual and prepare me for my future.”
Celia Dubroof of Gaithersburg High School received the MCT Academy of Finance Award. Dubroof currently holds a 4.5 weighted GPA, is a National Honor Society member, received an “honorable mention” status in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program, and received the Key Club Outstanding Leadership and Service award. “I feel that the business classes that I was required to take through AOF adequately prepared me for my college business courses ahead,” says Dubroof. “It is exciting to think that in just a few short months I will be taking my next steps to success in the working world.”
Students who applied for the David Cruces Memorial Award and the MCT Academy of Finance Award were judged on academics, extracurricular activities, volunteer and community service, honors and awards, employment history, a teacher recommendation, and a required essay.
The Academy of Finance, a member program of the National Academy Foundation, provides Montgomery County Public School students with the necessary education and programming to help them obtain a successful career in the financial field. Along with providing the $1,000 in scholarship funds at AOF’s annual graduation ceremony, MCT supports AOF by providing internships for AOF students, fundraising for the program, and volunteering on the AOF Board of Directors.
